The upward trend in the number of filed applications continued also in 2024, with an increase of 6.3% compared to 2023. The online process was the most popular option (used in approximately 97.5 percent of cases) for submitting patent applications. Very few applications were received on paper forms, by regular mail or at the offices of the Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Handcrafts and Agriculture (CCIAA).
Geographical distribution of applications in 2024*

Over 60% of applicants for patents were residents of the northern part of the peninsula, a percentage significantly higher than that of applications submitted by residents of other areas of Italy or abroad.
Granted patents and other final orders issued* in 2020-2024
*The final orders issued concern granted, inadmissible, rejected and withdrawn applications.
In 2024, out of a total of almost 10,000 final orders issued by the DGPI-UIBM after examining the applications filed, over 7,500 patents were granted, accounting for 77% of all the provisions issued. This is the highest percentage in the last five years.

Based on the International Patent Classification (IPC), patents granted in the 'Performing operations, Transportation' sector reached 32 percent in 2024, followed by patents granted in the 'Human Necessities' sector.
