Trend and filing procedure – Years 2021–2025

The filing trend for patents for inventions over the five-year period under review shows an overall positive trend, characterised by steady growth. Following the slight decline recorded in 2022, with 9,077 applications filed, the trend continued to rise in subsequent years, reaching its peak in 2025 (11,996) and surpassing even the 2021 level.
In parallel, the share of online filings remained consistently high throughout the five-year period, reflecting the digitalisation of the process, with online submissions now accounting for almost the total, remaining stable above 97% over the last four years and reaching its highest value of almost 98% in 2025. The use of the other two filing methods remained marginal, with just over 2% of applications submitted through the Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture (CCIAA) and only 16 applications received by the UIBM by postal mail.

The geographical origin of applicants shows a higher concentration in the northern part of the country. The North-West (32%) and the North-East (28%) are the predominant areas: together, they account for 60% of the total. The Centre contributes 18%, a significant share, albeit lower than that of the North as a whole. The South and Islands stand at 13%, while applicants from abroad represent the smallest share at 9%, reflecting a more limited presence of applicants residing outside the national territory.
Granted patents and other final orders issued – Years 2021–2025*

The percentage of grants relative to the total final orders issued by the Office shows an interesting trend. This figure, while remaining consistently above 70%, an indication of the good quality of the applications filed in terms of meeting patentability requirements, has recorded higher values over the last three years, with a peak of above 77% in 2024.

In 2025, based on the International Patent Classification (IPC), granted invention patents showed a clear prevalence in the "Performing Operations, Transporting" sector, which at 33% was the most represented. This was followed by "Human Necessities" (20%), and the technical-scientific sectors, which recorded lower but nonetheless significant shares, particularly "Mechanical Engineering, Lighting, Heating, Weapons and Blasting" (12.1%) and "Physics" (11%). The "Electricity, Fixed Constructions, Chemistry and Metallurgy" and "Textiles and Paper" areas recorded the lowest values, all below 10%.
