Trend and filing procedure – Years 2021–2025

2025 confirms the slight upward trend in the filing of applications for plant variety rights (14 applications), reflecting, as in other EU countries, the greater advantage of Community plant variety protection over national protection. The proportion of online filings reached a very high value in 2025, close to the maximum levels recorded over the five-year period under review.

During 2025, 2 final orders were issued granting plant variety rights.

Breeders who filed applications for plant variety rights in 2025 show a strong concentration in North-Eastern Italy, which accounts for the largest share at 50% of the total. Southern Italy and the Islands contribute significantly at 27.8%, while North-Western Italy accounts for a more limited share of 11.1%. The proportions relating to Central Italy and applicants based abroad are marginal, both standing at 5.6%.
