Trend and filing procedure –2020-2024

In 2024 were filed 20,821 applications for validation of European patents in Italy. This figure has been decreasing for the fifth consecutive year. Almost all validation applications were filed via the online platform. Over 93% of applications came from applicants with residence abroad. This decline is mostly due to the entry into force, on June 1, 2023, of the regulation allowing the European patent to be obtained without the need to file a validation request in the designated countries when filing the application with the EPO and to obtain unitary effect.

In 2024, 22,755 applications for validation of European patents in Italy were granted, showing a downward trend, in line with what was observed for patent filings.

“Human Necessities” and 'Performing operations, Transportation'. were the two sectors with the highest number of European patents subsequently validated accounting for almost 60 percent of the total.
