During 2022, the Directorate, as lead administration, participated in the negotiations, within the EU Council, on the proposal for a regulation on geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products, in close collaboration with the other Italian administrations concerned and with the like-minded EU countries.

The Directorate drafted comments and contributions for the lead administrations during the Digital Services Act (DSA) negotiations.

In view of future legislative reforms on patents, the Directorate also promoted EU public consultations among private stakeholders on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs), CCPs (Complementary Protection Certificates) and Compulsory Licenses.

At the international level, the Directorate intensified multilateral international collaboration within the framework of Group B and Group B plus, in particular on the harmonization of patent legislation on the grace period, and issues related to the TRIPs Agreement (Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) and the WTO (World Trade Organization) negotiation for the "waiver" proposal on existing patent rights for vaccines and diagnostic and treatment tools related to COVID-19.
