In 2024, the DGPI-UIBM promoted a new measure aimed at recognising the value of non-agricultural Geographical Indications (GIs), which are outstanding craft or industrial products made in specific regions of Italy, by providing grants for the development of the “Product specification” necessary to access the new forms of protection recognised at European level. Specifically, the call sets out the requirements, the eligible costs, the scope and conditions of supply the grants, intended for producer associations to cover the costs of technical support required to prepare the “Product specification” required for traditional craft and industrial products.
7 producer associations took part in the call for proposals and 6 applications were accepted. Each selected applicant was funded the full amount requested, for a total expenditure of over 140 thousand euros.
This, seemingly modest, figure represents a significant step for Italy, as it aims to encourage the entrepreneurial and craft sector to face the new challenges that Europe is facing, partly thanks to the measures put in place to protect the excellence of Made in Italy.
Numerous trades historically associated with great Italian craftsmanship participated in the call, such as Florentine-style jewellery made, which has influenced Italian art, architecture and craftsmanship. Other examples of the same importance are the cameos and corals made in Torre del Greco, Vietri ceramics and Murano glass, all testimonies to the culture and history of Made in Italy, recognised and appreciated worldwide.
